Artistic Freedom Monitor USA
Under the current presidential administration, artistic freedom– a right protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and enshrined in international human rights law –is under sustained attack. Government authorities are increasingly engaging in actions that restrict, suppress, or chill artistic and cultural expression. These include politically motivated efforts to withhold funding, censor publicly supported programming, ban the representation of minority groups in culture, and impose ideological oversight on cultural institutions and individual artists engaged in creative work. Such measures constitute a serious infringement on the rights to freedom of expression and cultural participation, and demand urgent scrutiny and accountability.
In response, we’ve launched the Artistic Freedom Monitor USA, an interactive platform and resource hub designed to document government efforts to undermine artistic freedom, explain their potential repercussions for our democratic institutions, and to help civil society and policy makers understand how they can take a stand for our democracy.
Interact with the data → The interactive features of our platform include a timeline that tracks executive actions, legislation, and policies that limit artistic freedom at the federal level, and a map that tracks legislation and government intervention at the state level. You can explore the timeline by theme – like immigration or cultural institutions – or browse chronologically. The platform is regularly updated and serves as a resource for artists, researchers, advocates, and the general public committed to defending freedom of expression.
Read our analysis → The platform also features white papers, articles, op-eds from AFI’s legal and policy experts on the implications of governmental interference in artistic expression. These materials offer in-depth insights into how policy decisions erode democratic norms and disproportionately affect marginalized communities, including artists and cultural workers at risk and in exile. Our analysis unpacks the broader socio-political consequences of censorship and ideological control, connects domestic developments to global trends in repression, and outlines the critical intersections between artistic freedom, civil liberties, and human rights.
Take action → In addition to tracking threats to artistic freedom, the platform empowers users to actively participate in defending it. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage directly with AFI’s ongoing campaigns to protect artistic freedom and cultural autonomy in the United States. These campaigns will include chances to sign on to open letters addressed to the presidential administration, send messages to state and local representatives, and support legislation that safeguards free expression. The platform will also connect users with grassroots mobilization efforts led by artists and cultural activists across the country.
