ADVOCACY FOR ARTISTIC FREEDOM
As authoritarianism and militarized violence continue to endanger artistic communities across the globe, AFI’s commitment to improving conditions for artists in their home countries takes on new urgency. In response to concerted efforts by governments to suppress free and open artistic expression, AFI launched our Advocacy program in 2024 to focus on research, policy, and public engagement that strengthens protections for artists, cultural workers, and cultural institutions.
The Advocacy program is primarily invested in the following focus issues:
- Freedom of expression
- Artists’ rights
- Artist mobility
- Safe migration
- Asylum and refugee rights
- Cultural rights and heritage preservation
- Cultural management
Since the inception of our thematic report series on artistic freedom in 2021, we have expanded our advocacy efforts to push for the development of new policies and protections for artists worldwide through a variety of other mediums.
