We believe that deep, evidence-based research and reporting is essential to understanding why artistic freedom is threatened and how we can protect it. Our report series is a core part of our work to confront the underlying causes of artistic suppression and to support a future where artists everywhere are free to create, engage, and thrive in their home countries.
Our research and reports bring rigorous analysis and lived experience together to illuminate patterns of restriction and violation, make sense of complex legal and policy environments, and expand global awareness of artistic freedom as a human right. In doing so, they serve as vital tools for advocates, policymakers, cultural institutions, and artists themselves.
Artistic freedom remains under-reported and misunderstood across much of the world. Through this research series, AFI seeks to close that gap, elevating the importance of creative plurality, advancing recognition of artists’ rights, and promoting structural change that enables artists to work without fear of censorship or persecution.
Our reports are rooted in international human rights law and informed by on-the-ground insights. They are designed to support a broad audience — from decision-makers and diplomats to artists, cultural leaders, and fellow advocates — in building a more just and expressive world.

As censorship rises and artists are targeted for speaking truth to power, protecting creative voices has never been more urgent. Since 2017, AFI has supported over 2,000 courageous artists who continue making art even when it places them at risk. Your contribution ensures artists can keep creating, sharing, and inspiring change—protecting both their voices and the right to artistic freedom worldwide.
