AFI takes a holistic approach to supporting artists whose freedom of expression has been threatened by censorship, persecution, or displacement. While much of this impact is deeply personal and difficult to quantify, the numbers reflect its scale: artists supported, pathways created, and ripple effects that advance progressive social change and strengthen artistic freedom as a fundamental human right.
Provided $6.5 million in direct pro bono assistance across our programs since inception.
Supported 4,400 at-risk artists and their dependent family members since AFI’s founding.
Artists in AFI’s network come from 60+ countries around the world.
AFI artists work across 40+ creative disciplines.
Provided 280+ months of fully funded residency placements for artists at risk.

Mehrnam Rastegari es un reconocido músico persa, compositor de bandas sonoras galardonado, cantante, violinista y maestro intérprete de kamancheh.

Nacida y criada en Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tara Asgar (nombre documentado Ali Asgar) es una artista, educadora y activista transgénero (ella/la) multidisciplinar que se centra en temas de género y deseo. Sus inicios profesionales y su activismo desafiaron las normas conservadoras de género en Bangladesh, especialmente en lo relativo a la sexualidad y el erotismo.

Sahraa Karimi es directora de cine, guionista y profesora universitaria de Afganistán.

Margarita Kuleva es artista, investigadora y comisaria. Reside en Nueva York y enseña en la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias y en la Escuela Steinhardt de la Universidad de Nueva York. Yasmeen is a Lebanese director, writer, and actress based in Brooklyn (technically Queens). Her journey began in Lebanon, continued with a master’s in screenwriting and directing in Paris, and took her to New York for an intensive program at Stone Street Studios.

Abjeez is an Iranian-born, Sweden-raised sister duo (Safoura and Melody Safavi) who blend the golden age of Iranian pop with rock, reggae, ska, and flamenco. Founded in 2005 as a response to artistic repression, their multilingual, socially engaged music has become a global voice for resistance, love, and freedom, including the Green Movement anthem “Biyaa.”
AFI’s specialized projects—past and present—are designed to respond to critical moments, emerging needs, and new opportunities. They extend our core programs and drive measurable impact in advancing artistic freedom worldwide.
As censorship rises and artists are targeted for speaking truth to power, protecting creative voices has never been more urgent. Since 2017, AFI has supported over 2,000 courageous artists who continue making art even when it places them at risk. Your contribution ensures artists can keep creating, sharing, and inspiring change—protecting both their voices and the right to artistic freedom worldwide.
